Waiting Out the Storm
By Ray Howell
Since March of this year, we’ve had to change our strategies and ask God for new a vision on how to best do His will with the ministry of Kicking Bear. God put these words in Brad Koehler’s heart, (Brad is one of our leadership team members), “Let’s use this time to our advantage”, and that is just what we are doing.
By using the Zoom App, we have been able to talk to and see each other and plan what strategies we are going to use during these uncertain times. As a result, Kicking Bear has gone from large group events to individual mentorship-type events and activities.
The leadership teams throughout the Nation are going to the overseers in each state and are encouraging Kicking Bear team members to use the tools of turkey hunting, fishing, bowfishing, golfing, hiking, or whatever special gifts God has given you. These special gifts are no different than the staff God gave Moses. God has given each of us special gifts and talents to do His will. Many of our team members are fishermen, archers, hikers, ball players, golfers, and more.
For me, I have taken this time to get myself prepared for the upcoming camps and hunts. I even made a video to share with our teams nationwide to let them know we are not backing off in this storm. I’ve had an absolute blast hunting and fishing with the KB kids this spring. For those of you who have never had the opportunity to mentor a kid, you will have more fun and joy than the kid you are mentoring!
I’ve also been working with others on videos to help make it easier to certify Kicking Bear team members in camp leadership and safety and writing magazine articles to tell the victory in Christ in the last 21 years.
It’s also given me the opportunity to catch up on my “honey-do” list that has been sitting stagnant for the last 21 years of Kicking Bear. However, I’ve found that the most important things are being involved in daily Bible study with my wife and sharing Bible passages and messages with others.
We are receiving bear tags so we can take kids on these bear hunts again.
We’re looking forward to launching Centershot chapters with all the churches and ministries we’re involved with to help in discipleship.
As a team, we’ve been praying for all those who are hurting and have lost loved ones during this storm.
We’ll continue to do more on social media to encourage our team members and others to get involved with youth who need spiritual guidance in their lives.
It’s been fun working with our local Base Camp Team and planning our next camp for August along with our annual fundraiser. Other teams are doing the same thing, just waiting for the go-ahead from our leaders.
